Killer Photos of Killer Whales on Gabriola Island

Last weekend, Pan Pacific’s Director of Finance, Geoff Bartlett spent his birthday with his family on Gabriola Island.

Gabriola Island is one of the larger gulf islands which lies about 5 kilometres east of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, to which it is linked by ferry.

The Bartletts stayed at Pages Resort, where they were welcomed by good friends – Ken and Gloria Hatfield.  Later that weekend, Geoff got a rare chance to photograph a family of Orca Whales.

“One evening, a local resident came down to the marina as he spotted a family of killer whales feeding just off-shore of Gabriola.  He invited Ken and my family on his boat to take a closer look.

My first look at the whales was an incredible sight I’ll never forget.

To our amazement, the whales warmed up to us quickly as they were often within a few feet of us, even once swimming right underneath our boat!”

Take a look!
