Docked Outside: Russian Guided Missile Cruiser Varyag and Irkut

That’s odd…There seems to be a Russian Battleship with 18 cruise missiles docked in our harbor!

While we normally see something more along the lines of a Disney Cruise Ship in our harbor, right now the Russian guided missile cruiser Varyag and tanker Irkut are in port and on their first visit to Canada.

Vancouver is the last visit of the Russian Detachment’s long-range cruise, in which they also visited Japan and the U.S.A. to strengthen naval cooperation.

Both ships along with Canadian HMCS Algonquin will remain docked from November 8-11 and will partake in several community events in honor of Veterans Week and Remembrance Day.

“We are looking forward to working with the Russians at sea, and then helping to host them in Vancouver,” said Algonquin’s CO, Commander Tim Kerr, “Interacting with the Russian Navy is not something that we do every day, and so it’s an exciting opportunity for the entire crew.”
